She was a renowned French stage actress of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born Henriette-Rosine Bernard on October 22, 1844, in Paris, she became one of the most famous actresses in history, known for her dramatic roles and captivating stage presence.

Bernhardt began her acting career in the 1860s and quickly rose to fame with her performances at the Comédie-Française and later at the Théâtre de l’Odéon. She was celebrated for her roles in plays by authors like Racine, Victor Hugo, and Alexandre Dumas. Some of her most famous roles included Phèdre in Racine’s “Phèdre,” Marguerite Gautier in Dumas’ “La Dame aux Camélias,” and Hamlet in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” where she performed the title role, an unconventional choice for a female actress at the time.

Bernhardt was known for her emotional intensity, unique voice, and the ability to connect deeply with her audience. Her fame extended beyond France as she toured extensively in Europe and the Americas, performing in both French and English.

In addition to her acting career, Bernhardt was also a sculptor and painter, and she ran her own theater company. She continued to perform even after a leg amputation in 1915, demonstrating her remarkable determination and passion for the stage.

Sarah Bernhardt passed away on March 26, 1923, but her legacy endures as one of the greatest actresses of all time, and she remains an iconic figure in the history of theater.
